ARCHIVE: Unified KB/OpenClaw/Zed memory architecture (superseded by memory-system)

ARCHIVED 2026-11-01. The current, authoritative description of the memory system is memory-system. This document is retained only for the pipeline history below (OpenClaw-era kb-sync phases, the Alexandria memory MCP that was later discontinued). Note: the “Hub sync cron” and “kb-test” described here no longer exist (cron removed 2026-11-01).

Canonical KB is the git repo /data/ai-persistence (hub checkout on handtrixxx.com, Gitea remote), mirrored into the Outline collection KB. Agent clients read and write memories through the Outline MCP (**docs.niklas-stephan.de/mcp**) and the semantic-search MCP (**docs.niklas-stephan.de/semantic/mcp**), or the kb/mem CLI. The Alexandria memory MCP (mcp.handtrixxx.com) was discontinued 2026-11-01: container, project dir, Traefik route, build volumes and MCP_MEMORY_* tokens are all removed - do not wire any client to it (details in the archived memory memory-system). OpenClaw has no direct kb link any more. This note keeps the pipeline state and the history that still matters.

Current state (2026-11-01)

  • Agent clients (Zed, pi, laptops): Outline MCP + semantic-search MCP (see memory-system); git clone + mem/kb CLI for shell work.
  • OpenClaw: REMOVED 2026-10-23 (container, project, authentik app, SSH key). No MCP clients besides the Outline/semantic pair.
  • Hub sync: cron on handtrixxx.com every 10 min runs bin/kb-sync sync --pull --push (git only: pull —rebase, lint, mem commit of stray changes, always push).
  • Tests: bin/kb-test (run from metis, read-only): kb lint, hub clone in sync, cron. MCP health checks now cover the Outline and semantic-search endpoints.

Gotchas (still valid)

  • Embeddings: the dedicated compose project /data/docker/llama-embed/ (embeddinggemma-300m, --embeddings --port 8001, caddy network) was removed 2026-10-27 - nothing consumes embeddings now. The semantic-search sidecar has its own embedding pipeline (memory outline-semantic-search-prototype).
  • mem commit sets a git identity; use git diff --cached (not git diff) to detect staged-but-uncommitted changes.

History (superseded)

Phases 1-4 (2026-10-20) were: kb-sync rendered AGENTS.md (via mem render --host openclaw-gateway), USER.md, MEMORY.md, memory/kb-*.md and mirrored skills/ into the OpenClaw workspace, ingested its daily notes and DREAMS.md into inbox/openclaw/, the compose mounted /data/ai-persistence:ro and memory.search.extraPaths indexed memories/docs/hosts/inbox (~97 files, ~750 chunks), kb-test ran 20 tests including a sentinel roundtrip. Replaced by the MCP path because OpenClaw 2026.10.4 cannot be a read/write hub (see memory-system). The Alexandria memory MCP served the MCP path from 2026-10-21 until it was torn down 2026-10-25 and finally discontinued 2026-11-01. The long design document docs/architecture/unified-memory-kb-architecture.md is kept as history. inbox/openclaw/ keeps the old ingested notes.
